Before you start. A few things to keep in mind before you start pasting paperwork or asking for advice. Do not paste passwords, Tax File Numbers, Medicare numbers, full bank statements, or detailed personal medical information into AI tools (the full list is on Rules That Matter). Verify anything specific before you act on it; AI is fast and frequently wrong (the recipes are on How to Check What AI Tells You). And there are some everyday things AI is the wrong tool for, kids' homework and heartfelt messages especially (the longer thinking is on When Not to Use AI).

If you want to see how all of this fits together across an actual week, before reading the topic pages below, the worked scenarios on A Week with AI follow two real households Monday to Sunday with the actual prompts they used and what came back.

You do not need a special tool for this. Claude or ChatGPT can handle an enormous range of practical everyday tasks that most people never think to ask AI about.

Planning and Organisation

Meal Planning

"Plan a week of dinners for a family of four. Two adults, two teenagers. Budget of $150 for the week. No seafood. Include a shopping list grouped by supermarket section."

Travel Itineraries

"Plan a 10-day trip to Japan for two people who love walking, food, and temples. Budget is moderate, not luxury. Include specific restaurant recommendations and how to get between cities."

Writing and Communication

Cover Letters, Resumes, and Job Search

AI is a powerful job search tool. This topic has its own dedicated section later in the guide covering resume tailoring, cover letters, interview preparation, company research, networking outreach, and application tracking. If you are job hunting, skip ahead to that section.

Complaint Letters

"Write a firm but polite complaint letter to [company] about [issue]. Include the relevant Australian Consumer Law provisions. I want a refund, not a replacement."

Gift Ideas

"My friend is turning 40. She loves gardening, crime novels, and Italian cooking. Budget is $50-80. Give me 10 specific product suggestions I can buy in Australia."

Learning and Explanation

Learning and Explaining

"Explain how superannuation works in Australia to someone who has never thought about it. Use simple language. Include what happens if I do nothing versus if I actively manage it."

Language learning is covered in its own dedicated section later in this guide. If you are studying a language, skip ahead to that section. AI has genuinely transformed what is possible for independent learners.
